University Industrial Placement Student Review

WIthin the COPD/IPF team at AstraZeneca, I am working on developing and characterising 3D lung organoid models to study fibrosis. Day-to-day, I maintain cell cultures, perform qPCR, ELISAs, and immunofluorescence, and analyse data using Prism. I collaborate with scientists across multiple labs, attend meetings, and contribute to wider team discussions. I’m also involved in AZ Inspire and have co-led key events like the Early Talent Showcase, combining science with outreach and leadership.

I was given significant responsibility throughout my placement. I led a project to develop and characterise 3D alveolar organoid models for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, managing experimental design, execution, and data analysis. I was trusted to maintain key cell lines, optimise assays, and present findings in team meetings. Beyond the lab, I co-led the Early Talent Showcase, chaired sessions, and contributed to cross-functional initiatives—demonstrating a high level of ownership both scientifically and organisationally.

I’ve developed strong lab skills in 3D cell culture, qPCR, ELISA, and immunofluorescence through daily hands-on experiments. I’ve improved my data analysis and scientific communication through regular interactions with scientists and by presenting at internal meetings. Leading Early Talent initiatives enhanced my leadership and teamwork abilities. Managing my own project taught me to plan experiments, troubleshoot independently, and align results with broader research goals, all while contributing to a collaborative, cross-functional environment.

I received consistent and valuable support throughout my placement. My supervisor provided regular guidance during 1:1s, and senior scientists were always approachable for troubleshooting and technical advice. The team fostered a collaborative environment, which made it easy to ask questions and learn from others. I also had access to wider development opportunities through the Early Talent community and Inspire Committee, which offered mentorship, career insights, and a strong support network beyond my immediate project.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at AstraZeneca. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that allowed me to contribute meaningfully to impactful science while developing both technical and professional skills. The balance of independence and support, combined with a positive and forward-thinking culture, made every day engaging. I especially valued the opportunity to lead a project, collaborate across teams, and get involved in wider initiatives like the Early Talent Showcase, which made the experience even more fulfilling.
