Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a summer intern, I had the opportunity to work on multiple exciting projects in the Building Services industry. The team were extremely patient with my many questions, genuinely supportive and helpful. My day would consist of individual work (drawings, schematics, calculations, design), attending and presenting in meetings, and even a site visit.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Definitely - it was one of the first things I noticed when I joined. I am really grateful for the trust the team put in me, and I learnt a huge amount by just trying my best, asking lots of questions and making notes. You really do get out what you put in to the internship, taking initiative in asking for work and asking questions meant that I delivered meaningful work by the end.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt a huge amount in my time at Arup, really facilitated by the team's collaborative nature and my own drive to make the most of the experience! I learnt new CAD software that I hadn't encountered in my degree, how to create neat, communicative schematics, ductwork design principles and calculations, among others.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

A huge amount. The buddy system meant that I was paired with a grad who was super friendly, helpful and patient with my many questions. My line manager was also really supportive and communicative throughout my internship.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Supportive and collaborative. It is assumed that you are driven and take responsibility for and ownership of your work, so you are trusted to get your work done. I felt very confident in asking the team questions and asking for feedback. There is an emphasis on team culture with socials and fun events.
