Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Day to day I'm working on mutiple projects, all building related, on a variety of mostly specific tasks. These may include applying knowledge of various components of fire engineering (compartmentation, escape distances ect) to technical drawings checking whether it meets regulation. Taks also include updating drawings or form filling standard intern stuff.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Due to the nature of the work completed all work I've completed has been checked by the project engineering and often the project manager before being released. Often I;d be working on the first draft of the technical drawing or note getting it started convering all the basic more lower level stuff which I'd learnt about so far.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed a basic knowledge of fire engineering priniples in design of new buildings and retrospective for existing buildings. I've also gained understanding of how fire but also consultancy is integrated into the design of buildings through the RIBA stages.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Support given in the placement depended largely on who you were working with. Some people see working with you as an opportunity to develop new talent and their managerial/ delegational skills whilst it may be that some view you as a bit of a hindrance or liability making more work for them.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Employees speak very well of Arup as a place to work and in my time here I so agree. People are nice, want to help out and are interested in what you get up to outside of you as an employee. However, there is a disconnect between teams within the office specifically so it may be a bit isolating when colleagues are working from home.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I've certainly enjoyed parts of my placement, learning new things and speaking to people about the work they do is interesing especially when they are invested into their projects. At other times I have found myself with little to do and doing tasks for the sake of having something to do. These are certainly less interesting and don't present a development opportunity for anyone involved.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Arup
From a more traditional engineering degree I've found it really useful to have this short time in a consultancy firm to decide that it's not for me. I'd also advise that as an intern keeping an eye on what you want to get out of the placement long term.
