Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
7.5 hours a day in the office, working on projects currently that Arup currently has in. No more than 2 weeks with any team/on one project. Will do bits of electrical work whatever needs to be done - lighting design, pv study, schematics, team meetings, distribution layouts, small power, checking regs, protection study, cable sizing. Learning to use lots of new software. Some time learning about engineering, some time doing more difficult/design work, some time doing more tedious/repetitive work. CPDs are on offer to take part in at lunchtime.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was involved in a project deadline and work that I was competing had to be in by the end of the week and was used in this deadline. Interdepartmental communication may have been done for me when I started but have been given more of that to do as time has gone on, I communicate task requirements, problems with my team and with others.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Feel like I have learnt a lot being in the workplace. I have used Bluebeam, DIALux evo, Revit and Trimble for the first time. Learnt about designing not just in a mathematical/academic way but also more practically, can it actually be manufactured, installed, maintained, is it useful, does it follow regs. Also learning interpersonal skills, I have done some communicating elec requirements to other departments like the BIM team - navigating an office is a new skill for me.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Everyone has been very welcoming, high up engineers will take time to chat and explain things to me even if I am not directly involved with them. People who I am directly involved with in projects have taken lots of time to teach me things, of course it varies person to person, but I can definitely think of a couple of people that have really gone out of their way to explain the ins and outs of projects, information I need to do my tasks and other background information that just gives me good knowledge.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have really enjoyed a lot of the work. At time I have found some of the more repetitive tasks to drag on a bit but overall there wasn't too much of this.
