Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My work on a day to day basis includes multiple aspects of design and analysis such as: hand calculations, 2 and 3D modelling, model analysis and reinforcement detailing checks as well as structural designs and reviews of both substructure and superstructure of multiple projects at multiple different RIBA design stages.
I also take part in multiple inhouse CPD sessions and skills networks which allow you to not only connect but learn from other engineers in similar fields.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given the same responsibilities as a graduate. All my work was reviewed by a senior engineer who would give pointers and assist me. However the preliminary work was carried out by me, with the help I need from a qualified engineer always available at request. This was beneficial as it allowed me to get things wrong and overcome failures which I learnt from more than solely doing something, knowing it is right.
Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
As part of my year in industry I have regular catch ups with senior engineers who monitor my progress and ask if there are parts of engineering I don't have prior knowledge of, or would like to improve my knowledge of. They will then put me on projects which will involve these aspects which help my progress and assist me in becoming a more rounded engineer.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Support and guidance were always available. I was designated a buddy (qualified engineer) and a line manager (chartered engineer) who would sit with me and help me whenever I needed. They would also give me pointers for improvement on both projects as well as university work I needed to do during my placement.
I also had quarterly reports with other engineers who would ask how work was going, and what projects I would like to work on to assist my development.
Finally, although I had a designated buddy and line manager, everyone in the team had knowledge to share and were always open to help at request.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
My year in industry was highly beneficial to both my engineering knowledge but also prepared me for life beyond university. It allowed me to connect with both new and experienced engineers.
My placement gave me knowledge which gives me confidence going back to university knowing far more than I started with. It has also not only given me core and fundamental engineering skills but has given me practical skills which will be useful at university as well as when I graduate.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Arup
Keep your mind open about opportunities in both engineering disciplines as well as your interests. Arup allows you to explore any skill you wish and the support and knowledge you require is all available you just have to look and ask.
Also don't be afraid to get things wrong, you aren't expected to know everything. Engineers in the team are always there to help and your work will always be reviewed and that's when you realise your mistakes and learn from them.
Finally, always review yourself and ask yourself why, why are you doing this calculation, why have you assumed something, because someone down the line will ask you why and you will know the answer. If you know why it means you understand what you're doing and that's when you learn the most.
