Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role consists of working with mechanical, electrical and civil engineers to create concept designs to fit a clients needs. As a mechanical engineer, this involves designing HVAC systems. My day to day work consists of pressure drop calculations and heating/cooling load calculations to help select appropriate HVAC systems for the client. It also involves using CAD to model HVAC designs within buildings and using software such as IES to determine the solar loads a building will experience.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was working on projects for clients after my first day so responsibility was given to me almost straight away. Most of the work I did was low risk such as internal data management or calculations which could be easily checked by a superior, however, some work involved meetings with external clients or site visits. Overall, I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility from day one, however all work I did was checked by superiors before it was sent out.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt how to use software such as Revit, Bluebeam and IES which I have not used before as most work involves this. Furthermore, I have developed a much better understanding of how HVAC systems work and the process involved in designing a system from scratch. My interpersonal skills have also developed due to the collaborative nature of all the projects ARUP are involved in.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was assigned a buddy at the start of my placement who helped me settle into the company and was my first point of contact if I had any questions. As well as this, I was assigned a line manager who was my source of work and went over all my work once completed. This was a very useful scheme as it allowed me to learn whilst working as well as receiving feedback once completing my work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Arup
Since the building services industry is niche and not taught at university, the best way to learn during an internship at ARUP would be by asking questions and volunteering to get involved with any projects available. Furthermore, attending their many social events is a great way to build connections and learn about the company from other people who have also done the internship previously.
