Summer Placement in Bridges and Civil Structures Team Review

Has changed between either document editing and small tasks, to helping with design checks and site visits. My work is often more varied each day as I do small tasks on numerous projects rather than the main chunk of one task.

I had responsibility over my own small tasks but in general the tasks were smaller and more finishing off jobs such as checking over reports. However, when I did get design tasks I was given responsibility to ensure I was properly following the required codes etc.

Yes, I have learnt loads of new skills, especially in numerous software. In just one week my proficiency in MicroStation was greatly improved and have also learnt Rhino, Blue Beam and just in general how to use Microsoft Office more efficiently. My communication skills have also greatly improved with constant interactions with team members.

I received lots of support with every task. It was a very welcoming environment where I was never afraid to ask a question if I was struggling. There are also a lot of courses available for extra support if needed.

Super welcoming and a friendly environment. Everyone is happy to talk and answer questions, even if they are outside of your team. Everyone also seems interested in your tasks and background so it is very easy to integrate.

I did really enjoy my placement, it gave me a great deal of experience in the field that I would not have been able to gain from solely my studies at university. There were times were there was a lull in workload and therefore I would have to undertake less meaningful tasks but overall a very positive experience.
