Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Day to day, I help out with a mix of research and project support in applied human sciences. I pull together academic insights into easy-to-understand summaries, build clear visuals in Excel or Power BI, and handle practical stuff like sorting accommodation or cost codes. I also work on outreach—writing messages to connect with sleep labs or research teams—and get creative with frameworks like PESTLE or Likert scales. It's a nice mix of technical tasks, collaborative projects, and digging into topics around health, behavior, and culture.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Absolutely! I was trusted with a range of meaningful tasks from the start. I took ownership of data visualisation projects in Power BI and Excel, managed details like a case study register and skills matrix, and crafted professional emails and outreach messages to research partners. I also led thematic reviews of academic literature and helped develop structured frameworks for team discussions. It’s been great having the freedom to explore ideas while knowing my work contributes to real decisions and collaborations.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Definitely! I’ve been building up my skills in data visualisation, especially using Power BI and Excel, by figuring out how to turn raw data into clean, useful visuals. I’ve also become more confident in professional communication, from writing clearer emails to crafting outreach messages for research partners. Plus, I’ve sharpened my ability to summarise academic findings and conduct thematic analysis, which has made my research work much more structured and impactful. It’s been a great mix of technical and communication growth.

I received a really good balance of support and independence during my internship. At the same time, I was encouraged to take initiative and explore my own ideas, which made the experience feel both collaborative and empowering. The team was always open to questions and feedback, so I felt confident navigating new tasks and building up my skills.
