Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
-Week-long training and induction, both to the company and to audit
-Working on a handful of clients you are assigned to, getting experience in many different parts of audit, particularly in fieldwork
-Shadowing meetings, both internal and with clients
-Shadowing more complicated audit work, with the opportunity to shadow people in other departments (eg tax) also
-Revenue testing, cut-off testing, agreeing invoices, etc makes up most of the work
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
For the first week or so, you're not given much responsibility to help you settle in, but as the internship progresses you're trusted with a lot more responsibility. I was contributing towards valuable work from the start, and it helps that everyone is more than happy to explain how the work you're doing is important to the audit, so you feel responsible for contributing towards projects almost immediately.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I came from a non-finance background, but I don't think it's disadvantaged me - the past few weeks have greatly increased my confidence in working with finances. I've developed my numerical skills, my Excel skills, and my professional communication skills as I've had the opportunity to communicate with real clients. It's also introduced me to audit-specific software, such as Datasnipper, which I now feel very confident using.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Support was always available whenever I asked for it. People don't assume that you just know what you're doing, and everyone is very friendly and willing to help, even those who aren't working on your project. My manager provided me with fantastic guidance and advice, I truly couldn't have asked for anyone better! We were also provided with an office buddy, who checked in with you regularly so there was plenty of support both personally and professionally.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everyone is incredibly friendly, and the interns were integrated into the office very quickly - we truly felt like part of the team! Challenges are seen as something to be tackled by the team, not by an individual, and it means everyone is willing to do their part and help out where possible. Definitely a very positive culture!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Forvis Mazars to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Forvis Mazars
The company look for potential more than skill. Skill can be taught on the job - I entered with virtually no experience in finance whatsoever. I would say to be yourself, be enthusiastic about the job and the specific role you want to do, do your research on the company and audit in particular, and be a positive person who's willing to learn on the job!
