Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Depends on the work available. As an intern, there were a select few tasks available. Processing invoices was the main task I completed. I also rolled over VAT reports and filled out payroll journal. I was also set projects that spanned over the course of the internship.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
It really depends on the day. Some days, I was a lot busier than other days. On occasion, the only work I had available was to complete mandatory training, which I completed fairly quickly as there wasn't much to do at times. Once I was assigned projects, my time was filled that way, as I was able to crack on. Throughout the days, I'd be given some work to do which I could then shift my attention to.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Over the course of the internship I was able to develop skills in Excel. This is particularly useful as this is a transferable skill as Excel can be used in a multitude of industries. Such skills are ones which I can carry forward. I also built up familiarity with accounting software and was provided training on using the software, which was essential to completing these tasks on a day-to-day.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
To be honest, it's really in your hands to look for support. If you crack on with a task on your own, everyone's going to assume you know what you're doing. With regards as to how I was performing on the deliverables, I always explained to the relevant people how I found the task and asked for feedback. With regards to general feedback, I had to get in touch with my manager to get a review. My advice would be to be proactive, otherwise you might not get much feedback.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
There is a really good atmosphere in the office. Everyone is friendly and seem happy to be in the office. Coming into the office was quite comfortable for me. I was happy to come in everyday. With regards to the culture, everyone seems to take a lot of pride in their work, and the core values of the firm are clearly in place when looking at how work is conducted.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I can say I enjoyed the experience. It was very enriching to give up time to learn about a different industry and humbling to see people that are willing to help me develop my understanding. To admit, the internship might not be the richest socially. Due to the size of the office, only 2 of the interns (me included) were present. I felt quite distant from the other interns and I would've liked to be in touch with them more regularly.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Forvis Mazars to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Forvis Mazars
Being proactive is extremely helpful. Be willing to help out wherever possible. If you're closed off, it's going to be harder to gain value from this experience and furthermore add to it. If people around you see someone willing to contribute, they'll be more inclined to hand work over if they get the opportunity. Although there is the option to work from home, go into the office as much as possible to make the most of your time and make your face known.
