BioPharmaceuticals and Oncology Research & Development Undergraduate Industrial Placement Programme Review

In my role, I focus on developing and improving laboratory workflows to produce important proteins for research. On a day-to-day basis, this involves planning and running experiments, testing different methods and technologies, analyzing data, and working with colleagues from various teams.

I had the opportunity to shape my own learning by discussing my interests with my supervisor, which meant I could get hands-on experience with a wide variety of techniques and tasks. It was especially rewarding to see the impact of my project on my colleagues’ work by the end of the placement.

I’ve learned a lot of new lab techniques and have also built on many of the skills I already had. I’ve had hands-on experience with new equipment and technologies, and I’ve become more comfortable with things like planning and running experiments, troubleshooting when things don’t go as expected, and analyzing lab results.

I received a lot of support and guidance throughout my placement. My supervisor was always available when I needed help or advice, and I also had a lab buddy to work with, which made it easy to ask questions and learn new things as I went along.

The company culture was really encouraging and collaborative. There were lots of opportunities to work together, and everyone was very willing to share their knowledge. People were always approachable and happy to answer my questions, even if they were from different departments.

I really enjoyed my placement. It was a great experience where I learned a lot, met supportive people, and felt like I was making a real contribution. The work was interesting and there was always something new to try, which made it both challenging and rewarding.
