Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I am responsible for the preparation and submission of various regulatory reports required by the Bank of England, the PRA/FCA and the Building Societies Association. My daily tasks include collecting and downloading data from internal sources, uploading this data into our excel workbooks and then analysing the data movements. I have to spot patterns in the data and then write commentary on this, or request commentary from subject matter experts within the company.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I have been given a lot of responsibility in my placement as I am the sole/ key preparer of numerous (over 15) reports. This has allowed me to develop my organisational skills as I have had to ensure everything is being delivered to a high standard and on time. If I want extra responsibility I also think there are lots of opportunities for that at Nationwide.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
A key new skill which I've learnt is Microsoft Excel, this is an application I use everyday and is very important. I learnt how to operate effectively in a team to get a job done and I've learnt a key skill of stakeholder management as I often communication with numerous people outside of my team. I also developed the skill of leading a team in a large team project.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a lot of support and guidance every day. There was always someone I could contact, whether that be about my everyday work or more personal matters. I had monthly one to ones with my manager which were great opportunities for me to bring up anything I wanted to!

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture at nationwide is so friendly and welcoming, but also very professional. Everyone is always willing to help and have a chat, whether that be about work or just everyday conversations. I found people taking time to check-in with me and offer some time to show me what there teams do. This was great as I got to experience numerous teams not just my own.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. It has been a year of professional and personal development and I have learnt so much that I can implement when studying at uni and beyond. I have built some great professional relationships and a network of supportive and intelligent people I hope to keep in touch with. I've developed key skills needed for a successful career in Finance.

What advice would you give to others applying to Nationwide
Take your time on the application process and always be yourself. Don't put what you think companies want to hear, put what you think and truly believe. Being authentic is a key skill and one employers always want to see in the workplace. Nationwide's mutual model is what sets them apart from other financial service firms so make sure to read about that and understand how they are different!
