Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As the Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Intern at BSH Home Appliances UK and Ireland, my role primarily focuses on promoting psychological safety and supporting the development and implementation of wellbeing strategies across the organisation. I work closely with the Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Manager to drive initiatives that foster a healthier, more inclusive workplace culture.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
Wellbeing Initiatives:
I support and coordinate a variety of wellbeing-focused activities, including organising internal events and drafting regular wellbeing newsletters aimed at engaging employees and raising awareness around mental health and overall wellbeing.
ISO 45003 Project:
A significant part of my role involves leading a project to integrate ISO 45003—the international standard for psychosocial risk management—into our business. This includes conducting risk assessments across all departments, collecting feedback from employees, and supporting the delivery of inclusive leadership training.
Policy and Strategy Development:
I contribute to the creation and review of wellbeing strategies and policies, ensuring they are aligned with best practices and relevant standards.
Survey Design and Analysis:
I design and distribute wellbeing surveys to gather employee insights and assess the effectiveness of current initiatives. I also assist in analysing the data to inform future improvements.
Team and Project Support:
On a daily basis, I assist my manager with various operational and administrative tasks, supporting both planned initiatives and ad-hoc requests related to health, safety, and wellbeing
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was trusted with a high level of responsibility throughout my internship, which gave me the opportunity to make a real impact within the organisation.
One of the most significant responsibilities I was given was leading the integration of ISO 45003, the international standard for psychosocial risk management. This involved planning and conducting psychosocial risk assessments across all departments, liaising with various teams, and supporting the delivery of training on inclusive leadership. I was responsible for managing the project timeline, gathering data, and presenting findings to stakeholders.
In addition, I was given ownership over several wellbeing initiatives, such as organising company-wide events and producing regular internal newsletters to promote health and wellbeing. I also played an active role in the development of wellbeing strategies and policies, contributing to the overall approach the business takes toward mental health.
While I had the support of my manager, I was encouraged to take initiative, make decisions, and bring forward new ideas. This level of trust not only boosted my confidence but also helped me build key professional skills in leadership, communication, and strategic thinking.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
During my internship, I’ve developed both new skills and strengthened existing ones—particularly in the areas of communication, project management, and psychological health in the workplace.
New Skills:
I gained hands-on experience with psychosocial risk assessments, learning how to identify, evaluate, and address risks that affect employees’ mental wellbeing in line with ISO 45003.
I also developed my survey design and data analysis skills by creating wellbeing surveys and interpreting the results to support data-driven decision-making.
Another key skill I’ve acquired is policy development—being involved in drafting wellbeing policies helped me understand the legal, practical, and cultural considerations required to shape a positive work environment.
Skills I’ve Developed Further:
My communication and stakeholder engagement skills have significantly improved through regularly working with colleagues across different departments and leading wellbeing initiatives.
I enhanced my project management abilities by independently managing the ISO 45003 integration project, from planning and coordination to implementation.
Additionally, I’ve improved my adaptability and problem-solving, especially when supporting my manager with various day-to-day challenges in a dynamic work environment.
Overall, this role has equipped me with practical, transferable skills that I can apply to future roles in health, safety, wellbeing, and broader HR or organisational development functions.

While I was given a high degree of independence in managing projects—such as the integration of ISO 45003—I always had access to support when I needed it. My manager took the time to guide me through more complex tasks, offer insight into the wider health and safety strategy, and help me reflect on my personal development.
I also had opportunities to connect with colleagues across departments, which allowed me to learn from different perspectives and expand my understanding of the business. The overall culture was open and inclusive, which made it easy to ask questions and seek input when facing challenges.
