Summer Intern Review

The day starts at breakfast with the other interns. Then I get to work in my department, often having a debrief with my supervisor/ trainee buddy about tasks to be done that day. Tasks are undertaken independently but team members are very open to questions and discussing work.
After lunch, I would continue work and likely have a few chats to discuss feedback. In the first week, we also worked on our group presentations.

There was great exposure to the work available and responsibilities undertaken at all levels of DLA Piper, and everyone was very happy to spend time to explaining their roles and give advice to the interns.

I have developed my legal research skills and used various new research platforms to assist with this.
Practising client-facing writing has been valuable, and I have learnt to anticipate ambiguities that a client may pick up on, and how to anticipate these.
I have also improved my attention to detail, particularly in reviewing unfamiliar contracts and forms.

The company has a very open culture, and we socialised with a complete range of people across the different roles at DLA Piper.
Partners were interested in and involved with the interns on a day-to-day basis, and everyone in the office was approachable.

I've found it highly enjoyable- although it can be an intense time, everyone at DLA is aware of this, which helps you feel more comfortable as an intern. It's been great to get involved in such a variety of tasks and actually feel that I have been learning- about the law and gaining real-world experience.
