Summer intern Review

My role has been dynamic, offering me the opportunity to engage in a wide range of tasks across the tax and employment sectors. I have been involved in drafting legal documents, conducting research and case analysis, preparing client correspondence, and attending client meetings both in person and via Microsoft Teams. Additionally, I presented at my team’s knowledge-sharing session, where I reported on recent legislative developments and current affairs relevant to Ireland.

Given the short duration of my internship, I understood that the level of responsibility I could be entrusted with would naturally be limited. That said, it was incredibly rewarding to see my contributions reflected in client-facing work and it was even better to know that the work I had assisted with was ultimately shared with clients.
I’m also aware of the challenges involved in training interns to a level where they can contribute meaningfully to day-to-day operations. Despite this, I experienced a genuine effort from every team I worked with to include me, provide guidance, and assign engaging and substantive tasks. I’m extremely grateful for the time and support they invested in making my experience both educational and fulfilling.

I’ve significantly enhanced my legal research and analytical skills by working on complex tax and employment matters. Drafting documents and client correspondence has improved my written communication and attention to detail. Attending client meetings has strengthened my interpersonal and professional communication skills, particularly in adapting to both in-person and virtual settings.
Presenting at team knowledge meetings has also helped me build confidence in public speaking and deepened my understanding of current legislative developments in Ireland. The internship has broadened my practical knowledge and sharpened my ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

I received a high level of support and guidance throughout my internship. Despite the short timeframe, team members made a clear effort to involve me, explain tasks thoroughly, and provide feedback. Their openness and willingness to answer questions created a very supportive learning environment.

I was genuinely impressed by the positive and welcoming culture in the office. Early in my internship, a former DLA employee stopped me during my commute after noticing my DLA tote bag. He shared that he had worked with the firm in the U.S. for over 30 years and spoke very highly of his experience. It was a powerful reminder that DLA’s supportive culture extends far beyond the Dublin office - it's truly global.

I genuinely enjoyed every part of the internship experience from start to finish. The organisation and support from the Early Careers team in the lead-up to the placement, the trip to London, and the effort put into helping us settle into our practice areas were all exceptional. I learned so much over the three weeks and am truly grateful to everyone involved.
