Apprentice Civil Technician Review

Using CAD software to produce models and drawings for drainage and highways design. Using modelling software such as infodrainage to model flooding for specfic sites. Producing reports regarding flood risk, drainage design and SuDS efficacy. Attending meetings and site visits to shadow senior staff members.

At work there is a good structure to work as I know what jobs are coming up next and what i will have to do to complete them. At college there is a clear set of modules to complete however the delivery and organisation of this has been average.

I receive the correct amount of support from my employer, they assist me when I need it but also try to push me to work independently an challenge myself but being able to ask questions when stuck or unsure of the best way to do something.

The lesson delivery varies from tutor to tutor and so does the support as sometimes you will wait or have to chase them to mark work after sending it or sometimes you won't get the assignment briefs when you would like them.

I think that it is mixed as the course is broader construction for half and more focused civils/structures for the other half, the parts on wider construction gave me a better understanding of other roles but the ones more focused on civil engineering are more useful for everyday work.

I have gained a massive amount of knowledge and experience in such a short time being here and the people I work with are helpful, friendly and have a great deal of experience so it is easy to learn a lot from them, you just have to ask.
