Apprentice Structural Technician Review

As part of my job I produce structural drawings packages and models using AutoCAD and Revit to display designs provided by senior engineers on a variation of project scales. This involves coordinating with those provided by other disciplines throughout the design process to reach the desired outcome of the project.

My Level 4 apprenticeship works on a day release basis and allows for a good balance between work and education. The course covers a wide range of modules in civil engineering. Jasper Kerr is willing to support me and very accommodating to structure workload around college when required.

The employer provides great support and encourage me to challenge myself. I have frequent meetings with a designated mentor to discuss progress, in addition to this the team as a whole are willing to guide me with work projects and college.

The college aims to provide multiple review meetings across the length of the course, however I believe there would be a benefit to make these more frequent to ensure academic progression remains on track.

The wide range of modules gives a good background to construction as a whole and benefits when considering the roles of others within the industry and how everyone's work can have an affect on others. I fell I would benefit from more time being spent on the engineering specific modules.

I have progressed really well with my career in such a small amount of time, constantly encouraged to keep pushing myself and have developed many skills that are useful both inside and outside of work. The office is filled with positive characters and is therefore a great place to work.
