Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My Role:
As part of the Central Functions HR Team, I work alongside the team to support over 750 employees across our Cheltenham campus and the UK. We provide shared HR services for a variety of business areas, including Group, UK Sales, GSC, Steam, and Gestra, while also collaborating with HR teams around the globe.
In my role, I manage the HR inbox, ensuring every employee query receives a timely and helpful response. I regularly liaise with Payroll to guarantee accurate and on-time salary processing. I also take the lead on my own projects, such as creating onboarding booklets and organising flu jabs, while supporting the team with a wide range of daily tasks.
My Key Responsibilities:
Manage the HR Support Inbox and respond to employee queries.
Create monthly business-wide communications.
Send new starter offer paperwork and prepare employees for day one.
Process employee changes and maintain all HR systems.
Conduct exit interviews and gather feedback.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes! I was given a lot of responsibility as I was the only admin within the team supporting over 750 employees. This meant that I was very much treated as a essential employee. Not only do I own many processes including new starters, leavers, any employee changes etc. but I also supported in business wide changes such as a large restructure.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed a whole host of skills within my placement both HR specific and general. I believe that my communication skills have improved the most throughout the year. I have also been able to develop my leadership skills and teamwork skills through projects. In regards to HR I have learnt how to review policies and keep systems working and up to date along with a whole host of those things.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a lot of support throughout my year from many people throughout the business not just my immediate team. Not only did I therefore have help in my role but also in anything else I may need. The environment at Spirax is very kind and supportive.
That said, the team is very under resourced so sometimes support was lacking due to capacity.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Spirax's culture is great. Everyone is very kind and always willing to answer your questions. I found it to be a very enjoyable company to work at. I would certainly consider coming back.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have really enjoyed my placement at Spirax! I have got a lot out of it! That being said, my role has been very overwhelming at times and the workload has been high at all times, therefore, though I would go back to Spirax, I would not return to the same role unless changes were made.

If someone was considering applying I would say absolutely go for it and I would say to make sure your are reflecting who you are in your application so that both you and the company know if you are going to be a good fit.
