Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Counting and selling currency, promoting on social media such as Facebook and TikTok, updating sales materials in the window, calling customers, holiday searching, taking enquiries, completing apprentice tasks such as location fact files and supplier fact files, sorting through emails, housekeeping tasks such as washing up and vacuuming, keeping track of what I'm doing through a document.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy most of my programme. The actual tasks I have to perform are good and I love the customer interaction/ sales side of it. However i have really not enjoyed any of the apprentice work that I have to complete in shop, it would be better if we could complete this work during training days. I also do not enjoy targets as they are not reflective of the level of demand my shop gets. Apprentices all get the same/ very similar targets but this does not make sense as some shops are much busier than others.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I can now confidently speak to customers both in person and over the phone, and know how to adjust my tone for different customers. I have improved my public speaking/ presentation skills through my training as we have had to do a lot of presentations with group work. My counting skills have improved from working with the currency through the bureau. My mathematical skills have improved from working out discounts, commission, direct debits, and more.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The programme is quite unorganised. Our group has not had a consistent trainer, we were not told information we should've known at the start of the apprenticeship, and instead had to learn it on shop floor in real time. This is fine in a quiet shop but makes no sense for those in busy shops. A lot of supplier websites we never had any training on. Documents such as development logs/ reflection journeys were not emphasised as important and something we should seriously work on.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I would say very little. I have had one conversation with the manager above my manager. My manager isn't interested in the apprentice side of my role and is focused on sales and targets. My trainer supports me as much as she can but she is overworked with all the apprentices who are behind. My co-workers support me as much as they can but they have their own things to focus on. I get support such as the benefits package, and access to mental health support videos, but it lacks and personal touches.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
My training provider gives me as much support as she can but deals with a big class of apprentices who are all needing support. She can't always tell me why I need to do something just that I do. Some of the tasks or training days make no sense for where we already are in our journey, and she does her best to try make these still relevant to us as well as interesting. However I have to mention the lack of a consistent trainer at the start of the apprenticeship until we came back from a break over February, which hindered progress as no one knew what they were meant to be doing.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
1/5
I am confused by this question I have not received my qualification yet, this is what I'm working towards through this apprenticeship.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
No that I'm aware of.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Hays Travel to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would as it is a stable wage and a fun job. I would not recommend the apprenticeship as it feels it has been a mess that no higher ups are actually fussed about, rather just a project to make the company look good.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Hays Travel?
Be prepared for more admin than you expect. Those going into apprenticeships should be prepared for having nothing to do before the New Year, and then receiving all the work they need to do in one go and being on deadlines for all of it while trying to hit targets and shops getting busier.
