Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My daily role includes preparing year end accounts as well as management/ pre-year end planning accounts. I also prepare self-assessment tax returns. Occasionally I complete some bookkeeping in Xero and carry out tax planning tasks such as inheritance tax planning.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I have really enjoyed having the mixture of learning in a classroom and well as carrying out the duties of the job in the office really enjoyable. I have found having this combination really useful for putting what I learn from my studies into practise at work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Going into the role having no prior experience, I have gained a lot of new knowledge and skills. I have learnt how to use different software's. I have also learnt the process of completing accounts and tax returns and have gained knowledge around this from my studies.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I find my programmed is structures really well, giving me the chance to have enough time to study for my qualifications as well as also having time in the office to build my skills in the workplace. There is a good balance between study and work and I rarely find I haven't got enough time to carry out my tasks to the best of my ability.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My employer is really good at supporting me at work and I always have someone in my team I can go to if I'm unsure of anything.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My training provider is really good at supporting my towards my qualifications and are always willing to provide extra focused help if I need. I find my training provider could provide more support with completing the apprenticeship side of the qualifications, such as the portfolio. However, overall I am happy with their support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I feel my qualifications have helped me to perform better in my role as it provides background knowledge to the work I carry out. It also helps me gain a better understanding of the work that I complete and the reasons behind why we do what we do. I don't believe my qualifications have helped me perform better in all areas of my role as there are elements which I perform better from practise in the workplace and experience.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are always extra-curricular activities to get involved in at my work, such as running & walking club. They also carry out social events such a rounders or other teams such as a netball and football team. There are also professional networking events that I am able to get involved in if I wish.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Old Mill to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I've found the people really lovely to work with and they have helped me to settle into the role and feel comfortable to ask questions while I'm learning. They provide good support with your qualifications and will put you through qualifications of all levels (AAT, ACA etc).
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Old Mill?
I would recommend people joining Old Mill to ask all the questions they have and make notes to refer back to. These become very useful while you're still learning. I would also recommend to block out time each month to update your off the job hours for your apprenticeship and to update your portfolio to ensure you are always up together with this.
