Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Entirely depends based on my current placement. In my previous role I was very hands on performing engine maintenance, in my current role, there will be much more meetings, office work, working at a desk etc.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy days when i am busy and am enjoying what i do more and more with time. I really disliked the college aspect of it as it was poorly managed and delivered (online).

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have generally developed knowledge and confidence more than i have developed skills. There would definitely more the company could be doing.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
Most work towards my apprenticeship is self led, finding placements, evidence reports. OTJ hour tracking and general admin managed by the company has been poor. The college aspect of the apprenticeship was very poor, with not enough transparency or help, at worst we sat through an 8 hour maths lesson online, which is not a beneficial way for anyone to learn.
also management are not properly checking in with line managers to assess apprentice well-being and performance and whether they may require more support.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
1/5
minimal, i disclosed learning disabilities, however the only support offered was extra time during exams - we do not sit exams. 12 week check-ins are purely procedural. there is little opportunity to learn more outside of strictly your role. Others i know of who have struggled, especially with the college side, have received no help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
not much at all, for our HNC there wasn't much, teachers were mostly good but were not provided with a way to properly support us, many students were pretty much on their own. The engineering standard is a joke, if providing us with a template for evidence reports counts as support, then sure, some support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I think a HNC is little more than a piece of paper that someone has arbitrarily decided is required for some job roles. Although, as it is required, it would be nice if a HND was also offered, as there is more than enough time to complete a HND as well (HNC is completed in less than half the apprenticeship).
I feel i have gained infinitely more from actual experience through working and performing a role, than lying on my bed, logged into a digital classroom.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
There are a few, employee resource groups for one, however most is organised by individuals rather than the company e.g. ski trip.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Ultimately, the pay is okay and if university is not for you, you will come out with more experience and confidence as well as a decent CV.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Say yes to as many opportunities as possible. be as sociable as possible, it is so much more who you know than what you know, networking is king.
