Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role as a Consulting Apprentice is to mainly help with the day-to-day operations of the departments which I work in. Within the apprenticeship, you have the opportunity to rotate around different departments meaning that your experience day-to-day will be different within each one. Similarities across all departments include client-facing meetings, testing or analytics work on excel and report writing work on PPT - no matter what department you are in. It should be noted that some departments might have a heavy emphasis on certain day-to-day responsibilities such as report writing or data analytics. The rotations are really good for development and trying new departments which is rare to see in a Professional Services apprenticeship
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy my programme at KPMG. The firm not only gives you a variety of work on the job as an apprentice, but there are also a range of side-of-the-desk activities, societies and networks which give you the opportunity to connect, network and collaborate with other people in the firm if you wish to do so.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Throughout my time at the firm, I have definitely improved in a range of skills. In particular, for technical skills, the work allows you to learn softwares such as Excel, Word, PPT and Visio whilst you are on the job. For soft skills, being in front of clients naturally enhances your presentation and communication.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I would say the programme is fairly structured in terms of the apprentice induction as well as the learning element of the programme. However, the structure of the work and day-to-day is fully dependant on your team and how they want to use your time in the department - and in some cases, this can lead to a lack of work for parts of the year.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
As a firm, I would say KPMG are very apprentice-aware. From when you join a team, teams generally understand the experience of an apprentice as well as how to support one. The team will give you a Buddy, Performance Manager and additional contacts within the firm to ensure you feel supported whilst working and studying.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
In my opinion, outside of the regular mandatory lectures and webinars, the training provider doesn't provide much more additional content or resources. Although that being said, they do cover the essentials of the course really well to put you in a good position to pass. You will also have a personal coach from the provider.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I feel like my qualification is somewhat relevant to the work that I do. Currently the qualification (Level 4 Junior Management Consulting Accreditation), teaches how consultants should present, network, report write etc etc. The level 7 qualification (ACA or CIMA), I have heard is generally less relevant to the role of a management consultant.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Within the firm, there is a wide range of societies and networks which you can take part in. Groups like sports teams, religious groups, Cultural Groups and groups centred around neurodiversity are just a few which the firm has. For apprentices specifically, there is an apprentice community that organises socials and networking events - both within the firm and with other firms.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Although a degree apprenticeship can be hard, KPMG provides good support in helping an apprentice get through the apprenticeships. As well as this, the practical skills which you develop set you up for a healthy long term career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
Be specific with your application (CV, Cover Letter and Interview). Don't just talk about why you want to go into consulting but also talk about why you want to join KPMG specifically. Also look and reflect on the values of the firm. Finally brush up on your maths - percentages, depreciation, algebra - it will help in the online assessments for most firms.
