The Hays Travel Apprenticeship program is amazing. The trainers are all very helpful and genuinely lovely people. You are definitely thrown in at the deep end when it comes to working in branch but it was a great way to build my confidence and knowledge. The training days start at 2 times a week but then go down to 1 day a week which is perfect and they give you all the knowledge you could ever need.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I very much enjoy my programme. They teach you most of the basic things that you need to know and then everything else you learn as your start to sell all the different holidays and suppliers. The only thing is that the apprenticeship started in July (they had a pre apprenticeship) which was a bit difficult as i finished school in July as well.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

i have developed my knowledge on geography and destinations. I had a little bit of knowledge on he different travel suppliers. I have now learnt about all the different systems that are used. I have built on my customer service as it is very hands on when it comes to customers

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is very well structured. They teach you all the main systems that you will need to use in your training days. They also go through holiday types and the main destinations in the training days. Your trainer also comes into your branch once a month to see how you are getting on
How much support do you receive from your employer?

All my colleagues in branch helped me very much when i first started my apprenticeship. They made sure that i was comfortable with talking to the customers and looking on the systems. They were all happy to help with any questions or worries i had. Our regional managers also do weekly meetings where they praise people and it was always nice to see my name
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Our trainer help us and gives us weekly training sessions. She makes sure that we are all comfortable and happy with the different systems and destinations. She explains what we will have do to work towards our qualification. They help us with our worries and encourage us when we have fears
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I have developed more of an understanding on different destinations and restrictions when it comes to the countries. I know more about passports, visas and tourist taxes. I am more confident in my customer service
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have the opportunities to do educationals which is where the company sends us to a certain place so we can learn more about the destinations and the types of hotels. We also have the opportunity to go on ship visits which is where we can go on cruise ships and learn all about them

It is very fun and i love helping customers find their perfect holiday.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Hays Travel?
Have an interest in Travel and Geography. Have good customer service skills and be comfortable talking to all types of customers. Be patient and have a good mind set for when we have our slow or busy spells
