3.8/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Different roles throughout - started with hands-on work in the test labs, lead a regression test project and then changed to a more specialised infrastructure team. Day-to-day work involves stakeholder management, project management, and lots of technical learning.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
My programme itself has been good but has not been always well-managed. Saying yes to opportunity for external engagement and additional learning has opened a lot of doors and helped me make more connections.
Overall, the programme covers a lot of topics at a reasonable level of depth.
Only downside has sometimes been the uni courses where I experienced some inconsistency in the quality of teaching

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
On the job - technical knowledge (transmission, networking, automation), presentation, understanding legal texts and processes, project management
At university - software engineering, networking, cyber security, efficient written communication and academic writing

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
On the work side, I have had luck with many outstanding line managers who provided lots of support and encouraged learning.
At uni, the programme has sometimes been not well structured and organised with a few changes in lecturers and assignment briefs with minimal notice.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
At work, I've had great line managers who have always supported my personal and professional development. They have always recognised my strengths and achievements and have provided useful feedback to help me improve.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My training provider has been generally supportive - the academic staff always try hard to provide support but they sometimes appear swamped/ overwhelmed by queries.
Some academic staff has been okay, others have been outstanding.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification overall has taught me many skills that are generally quite helpful but I've ended up in a role that is only tangentially relevant to my degree. So overall, my qualification is very nice to have and might prove more relevant in the future.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Work: sports club at work, volunteering, bake off, hobby clubs
Uni: clubs and societies, but usually felt a bit removed from the apprenticeship community at our slightly remoter campus

Yes

BT is a great place to work with loads of different teams all doing super cool work. People are knowledgeable and generally supportive and it's a place to work where you will never have to get bored.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
Prepare well for the assessment centre - make sure to have some background knowledge about BT and stress why you are excited about the company and the work BT does (if you don't know much about what BT does, look for press releases on recent research). Good luck!
