Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work as a Paramedic Apprentice which involves blocks of academic learning/study, as well as blocks of ambulance placement and operational shifts on an emergency ambulance.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student paramedic apprentice and have enjoyed the mixed learning structure of academic work/placements.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Throughout my course I have learned many new skills, including clinical skills such as advanced airway management, IV/IO access, advanced life support, major incident management and developed existing skills such as patient assessment/management, referrals and pathways.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The learning delivered by NEAS has been very well structured throughout the programme. At times I have struggled with the operational shifts (particularly in Year 1 and 2) due to the shifts being relief and often allocated at short notice. I did feel supported by the training department with amending shifts where appropriate.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
We have received a lot of support from our employer. The training department always consider our best interests and assist with any issues where possible.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Same as above.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Through skills and knowledge I have learned throughout my qualification I now feel prepared to transition into the next phase of my career as a Newly Qualified Paramedic.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
I haven't taken part in any sports teams at NEAS however I am aware that there is a women's football team. I have used the CPD portal on the Siren page to access webinars/extra learning.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend North East Ambulance Service to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have really enjoyed my learning experience and feel that everything I have learned has well prepared me to start as an NQP.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to North East Ambulance Service?
The course requires a lot of hard work and dedication, often requiring sacrifice of personal time to complete assignments/learning. Therefore there needs to be a strong desire to take on the course. Be prepared by getting into the habit of completing CPD/learning outside of work and start carrying out reflections.
