Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Managing costs for a variety of construction projects. Pre-contract involves procurement, preparing tender documents, evaluating bids and choosing suppliers. Post-contract involves looking at the Application for Payment, reviewing any Compensation Events, assessing quotations, and Contract management.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy day-to-day activities and working with the team. I would have enjoyed it more if there were more apprentices in my team, so that we could work together, help each other, network, go out for lunch, etc.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, many which include:
- developed confidence and communication
- learnt how to negotiate with the Contractor
- learnt how to chair meetings
- learnt how to assess Compensation Events according to the Contract
- learnt how to assess the Application for Payment and quotations

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
In general, it's fairly well organised and structured as it should be. However, my company was meant to enrol me into university in the first year of my apprenticeship (as per our Contract) but were not able to. This was extremely disappointing and delayed my course by a full year
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I receive support whenever I need it. The company told us at the start of our scheme that we'd have a specific 'buddy' that would guide us with things, but we were not appointed anybody specific. In general though, there are still quite a few people to go to if we have questions.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
We receive quite a good amount of support, however, it is difficult to benefit from the support fully as it is completely online. Nevertheless, it is still useful and I have received support for my anxiety which was reassuring.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Fairly well. Some of the content we learn isn't relevant to my role but I guess it is useful to know in general as it links to the industry and to the roles of people I may be working with.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Yes, there is a football team which you can get involved in, and there are also some social activities from time to time. I definitely feel as if there can be a lot more, as I'd like to get involved in a variety of sports and also attend more networking events but they don't happen very often.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Good company where you can gain experience in a range of different departments. The teams are generally kind and supportive, and there is a significant focus on RICS for those that are sitting it, i.e. regular sessions and a few mentors that you can go to
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
Focus on the company's vision and values. Speak about how you align with these values and tailor your responses to the company's goals. Speak about sustainability and diversity too.
