Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As the most junior resource of a team (and unqualified), I am given a range of simpler tasks that are achievable, sensible and importantly broad ranging. These range from client and team meetings where my opinion is valued, to independent testing of financial statement line items. Throughout I have always been challenged and engaged.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Whilst for legal reasons could not be signing off on work, I was given the freedom to attempt many different tasks. I felt like a true team player doing the same activities on projects as my colleagues, and these felt meaningful because they were completely necessary to the audit. My exposure to business was large through a range of different activities assigned to me.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have learnt a huge range of financial skills and business acumen, to the extent I feel comfortable talking in these terms. I have learnt how the Big 4 use technology in carrying in modern audits, and how the profession is undergoing digital change. Further to that, I think I have developed pre-existing skills relating to time management and a portfolio approach to my time.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Coaching is one of PwC's many strong points. After some initially rapid training, my team were very happy to sit down with me and explain processes to me, in a very understanding way. I received as much or as little as I wanted.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Whilst hybrid working is fully embraced at PwC, I was actually persuaded to travel into the office daily in order to experience the brilliant culture the firm has developed. A range of different work spaces facilitates both independent and team work, always accompanied by a high degree of camaraderie.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have loved my internship experience. For someone who's primary goal was just to gain exposure to professional services and business acumen, I feel I've come away with this and so much more too. The skills alone I've learnt are not the only important conclusion, I think I've left with a network of connections and relationships too.

Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to PwC
Become really familiar not only with the firm's end product and their lines of service, but also their focus on inclusion and diversity within their workforce. It's important to tap into their professional person specification from the start of the process.
