Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a Strategic Development Assistant and Chartered Manager Degree Apprentice at Action for Children, my role involves supporting cross-functional teams with coordination, strategy, and process improvement. On a day-to-day basis, I assist in the development and delivery of organisational strategies, help manage governance frameworks, contribute to internal projects, and provide business and administrative support across departments such as fundraising, communications, and corporate services. I also collaborate on knowledge management, evaluation, and capacity-building initiatives to help drive operational excellence and long-term impact.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme—it's both challenging and rewarding. As a visual learner, I find it incredibly valuable to apply theoretical concepts from university directly into my work at Action for Children. Studying at Queen Mary University of London has provided unique opportunities; I have access to the same resources as a full-time student, including professional development workshops and fully funded training like PRINCE2 Foundation and the BCS Foundation Certificate in Business Analysis.
The support from faculty has been amazing—our module organisers are approachable and helpful, and my academic tutor, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], has been a continuous source of encouragement. I also really value the leadership spotlight sessions hosted by [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], where we’ve had the chance to hear directly from inspiring leaders in the third sector like [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]. It’s been a great mix of academic depth, practical application, and sector insight.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, throughout my role I have both developed new skills and enhanced existing ones. I've strengthened my project management and organisational abilities by supporting cross-departmental initiatives and coordinating multiple workstreams. I've also developed my analytical and strategic thinking skills through contributing to business planning and governance activities. My communication and stakeholder engagement abilities have grown significantly, particularly through presenting ideas, supporting workshops, and collaborating across diverse teams. Additionally, I’ve deepened my understanding of organisational development, business processes, and how to drive improvement through evaluation and feedback.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
As part of the first-ever cohort trialling the one-day study model while working four days at Action for Children, there have been some initial challenges. That said, the programme is clearly structured, and all key information is available on QMplus. Like any pilot, not everything always goes to plan, and we’ve experienced some bumps along the way—but these have been valuable learning opportunities, and support has been available when needed.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a strong level of support from my employer, both academically and professionally. My line manager and placement managers have been understanding and flexible when it comes to balancing work and study commitments. I’ve also had access to mentors, learning opportunities, and the chance to rotate across departments, which has helped me grow a broad skillset. There’s a real investment in my development, and I feel genuinely supported throughout the programme.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a great level of support from my training provider, Queen Mary University of London. The lecturers and academic staff are knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely invested in our success. My academic tutor, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], has been consistently supportive, and the Programme Director, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] provides strong guidance and leadership. The university offers access to resources, professional development workshops, and opportunities such as guest lectures and industry events, which help me contextualise my learning and stay motivated throughout the programme.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
My qualification has been instrumental in helping me perform better in my role. The course blends theory with real-world application, allowing me to directly apply academic concepts—like strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and leadership—into my day-to-day responsibilities at Action for Children. It enhances my critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making, making me more confident and effective in my work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there are plenty of extra-curricular activities to get involved in at Action for Children. I’ve had the opportunity to join various employee networks such as the England Diversity & Inclusion Group, the Wellbeing Strategy Group, and I also co-chaired the Achieve Network and the Muslim Network. These groups create space for open dialogue, professional development, and meaningful change. There are also regular events, workshops, and networking opportunities—like leadership spotlight sessions and staff conferences—which help build connections across the organisation.
