Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
2/5
On a day-to-day, I am given odd jobs to perform around the office, this can be helping out others with their jobs, or working on a project for the production environment. I began my apprenticeship with a large project involving GMP but since that has been completed I have run out of goal oriented tasks and it is hard to get meaningful tasks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
I enjoy certain aspects of my programme, I like the uni course and I enjoy the environment I am working in, but the monotonous tasks I am given can be quite frustrating. However, I understand that I am the first degree apprentice they have hired in this department, so it is subject to change when the management have found their bearings, but I wish this would have been thought through beforehand.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have learnt a lot on this apprenticeship, both in university and in the workplace about GMP and general knowledge of production specifically for GSK. Being more critical and quality focused is definitely one of them, in the production of medicine it's incredibly important to have low tolerance.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
My programme is not very well structured, again I understand that I am a guinea pig in a sense for this new apprenticeship. However, I would have liked some real projects to work on that really involve physically working on machines.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive lots of support from all my colleagues around me, as much as they can give. The only issue is that in the production environment, problems arise all the time that they have to deal with constantly. So are often putting out fires which makes it hard for them to give up time, But when they can they always help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Whenever I have any questions involving a subject or an assignment, the lecturers are always happy to help with anything. They answer them as best they can with quick responses too. There is also the Learning Development Centre which can help you with work too.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
It is hard to say how well my uni work has contributed to my role, because of the tasks I perform daily, but lots of it seems to play a part at some point in the engineering pipeline. Electrical, mechanical and general practice in engineering are all covered in the course.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are loads of activities you can get involved with at work that can help you network with other people, and also just relieve stress from daily life. The apprentices often have social nights out but there's many clubs you can participate in too with a wider reach.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think even considering the setbacks of my course, GSK is an incredibly secure company to work for, and has lots of perks that come with it. Everyone here is incredibly friendly as well. Yes, my course can frustrate me, however I understand that it's hard to navigate the manufacturing environment whilst trying to teach someone new everything that goes on, nonetheless I am making progress and enjoying it, and I suspect that future apprentices will have more of a structure, it only picks up from here.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
Be friendly and passionate! GSK will want someone who is a genuine person instead of a monotone robot designed for an interview. If they can see that you care about the role and want the job, they will be more likely to consider you.
