Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My role primarily involved using biophysical techniques to help answer questions from other departments on a request-based basis. I was expected to be proficient in these techniques, understand how and when to employ these techniques, obtain accurate results, and be able to analyse and present these results to non-experts. On average, I spent approximately 10-15 hours in the lab a week (sometimes more or less depending on demand, this fluctuated a lot throughout my placement), whilst the rest of my time was spent planning experiments, analysing data, etc.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given a lot of responsibility. From the start of my placement, I was executing experiments independently where my supervisor thought I was capable. I took the lead on multiple projects. Particularly when it came to my own Masters project, I was given almost complete agency over the direction of my project and when/how the experimental work was carried out. That being said, if I ever had questions/issues, I always felt like I could reach out for help, so I never felt too out of my depth.

Be genuinely passionate about the area you're applying for! At the end of the day, GSK are looking for someone who's curious, passionate, and easy to work with. They don't expect you to know everything as a student, but you have to be willing to learn!
