Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I carried out work packages to support the team, as well as completing the project assigned to me as part of my placement. I conducted HPLC analysis, as well as LCMS and GCMS occasionally to support current drug submissions for GSK.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was trained for the first 3 months, and then allowed to work independently to complete tasks, checking in with my supervisor regularly and my manager once a week.

I learned how to work independently to GMP standards, write validation protocols as well as successfully complete them, and analyse data.

I received a lot of training at the start of my placement, as well as being able to ask my team and supervisor for help/guidance.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

There were regular team lunches, and department wide team building activities (like team quizzes). Outside of the office, there are regular sports practices every week and other clubs such as chess and crocheting, and employee resource groups.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

There were many opportunities for me to take on development activities that were not directly related to my placement, and my manager was happy for me to undertake these. There was a very big cohort of other placement students which made the experience more enjoyable as there are a lot of other people that are in the same position as you.
