Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I started off as a Quality Inspector Apprentice at HPP but as I now come to the denouement of my apprenticeship I have secured a job as Quality Engineer. My job consists of ensuring the absolute best quality of parts manufactured internally that go into the Mercedes AMG Formula 1 engine. We use the phrase "Protect the power unit" along side this, I also investigate when we have failures due to quality issues and consistently improve the process.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Very much, the whole company looks after you and makes you want to come into work each day. It helps that what we do as a company is something that most of us care about.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Everything I know about engineering I have learned on this apprenticeship. I know lot's from how to read and interpret engineering drawings to running CMM machines and making difficult quality decisions.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Structure of it from an operations/HR standpoint was good and well organised. Internally there was some confusion over the three years with rotations and training which could have been much better.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Received lots of support throughout the 3 1/2 years of my course. I wish that there was more planning however, when it came to the 20% off the job time. This didn't seem well planned.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Received a fair amount of support with regard to coursework and out of hours communication.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It helped me with a underpinning knowledge of engineering to apply within my role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Team building activities outside of work and a close group of friends formed based on the fact we all started as apprentices at the same time and working in similar departments.

It is a great place to work and a proud place to work. HPP makes you feel valued and the aims of the company are something to get behind.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains Ltd?

Always show your enthusiasm. If you want a job here, for me being enthusiastic about what we do and how we approach tasks is a big thing. especially when it comes to the apprenticeships. No one is looking for a finished educated apprentice, what is more important is that you have the right personality to be proactive and adapt to a quickly moving situation and learn!
