I am a Project Management Apprentice within BAE Systems. My role is heavily dependent on the placement I am in, in which traditionally placements last 12 months. In my current placement, I am responsible for a few projects which I am the project manager with an allocated team. My role is to schedule, plan meetings, liaise with stakeholders, manage costs and allocate resources to name a few responsibilities.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the being able to learn academically and put my knowledge into practice in my placements. Being able to work on a variety of live projects has been a great learning experience and has provided plenty of challenges that I have learnt from. However, I often find that there is limited communication between the business and academic provider.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to manage a project within my companies processes and systems and how to apply my academic knowledge, from my University, into my daily job and role. I have learnt additional skills, from learning new systems and software which is job specific.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

limited communication between business and academic provider results in feedback not being heard or accepted. Similarly, there seems to be a mixed understanding from the business and academic provider about the end deliverable for the degree apprenticeship (different understanding of finish dates and EPA)
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have regular 12 weekly catch ups with my skills coach (early career mentor) in which I can request any support that I believe is necessary. Additionally, I am supported within my placement by my line manager and department manager. Overall I feel supported in my apprenticeship and know who to ask for help if necessary.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Initially I felt well supported by our training provider but as the course continues we have less face to face lectures and more independent study which makes me feel less support, despite regularly feeding back to the training provider no adjustments have been made.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

the qualification provided by my training provider has given me a good foundation of knowledge that I can implement and build on within my role. Being able to put the knowledge learnt from my training provider in to practice in my role has helped my understand my role better.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I regularly attend off the job activities to help me expand my knowledge and experience as well as attending STEM events when I have time.
