Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a Geotechnical apprentice i complete geotechnical desk studies which involves looking at geological and historical maps as well as borehole records to create a model of the ground. I then complete calculations to ensure that the ground can support proposed structures. Once i have gained further experience i will be given the opportunity to supervise site works. As a geotechnical apprentice i have worked on a large variety of schemes across a large number of industries.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I continue to really enjoy my programme due to the variety of tasks i have been given the opportunity to work on. I feel that I am offered a great amount of support by my colleagues who are all interested in my development. I would thoroughly recommend a degree apprenticeship to any hard working individuals.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have greatly developed my report writing skills. I have also learnt how to use new pieces of software for example QGIS and ArcGIS as well as different versions of CAD .

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

I feel that my the programme could be made simpler. I have on a few occasions been told to follow different guidance which has been contradictory. However, if you know who to speak to it becomes very clear what the correct process is for my degree / progression via ICE.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive lots of support from my employer. They offer me time off to support my studies as well as time to complete training to continue my development. All of my colleagues are also helpful in providing time to explain difficult / new topics to me.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Extra-curricular activities are encouraged at work including after work events and professional networking opportunities. Jacobs also have lots of networks for employees to join.
