As an Apprentice Cost Consultant at a leading construction consultancy, my role involves supporting the commercial management of large-scale infrastructure projects. On a daily basis, I assist with preparing cost estimates, tracking project expenditure, reviewing contractor applications for payment, and ensuring all works align with budgetary controls and client expectations.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Overall, I enjoy the programme and find it rewarding. It offers a good balance between hands-on experience and academic learning, which keeps things engaging and helps me build practical skills alongside theory. I appreciate the opportunity to work on real projects and contribute to meaningful outcomes, especially in sectors like healthcare.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

’ve developed a much stronger understanding of cost estimating, measurement, and the use of industry tools like Excel I’ve also improved my communication skills through regular interaction with project teams, and I’ve gained confidence in interpreting technical drawings and producing accurate quantities. Working on live projects has helped me apply what I’ve learned in university to real-world situations, which has been invaluable for my growth

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is generally well-structured. There’s a clear pathway for development, with regular reviews, set objectives, and a mix of on-the-job learning and academic study. My company provides good support through line managers and mentors, and I’m given responsibilities that grow over time, which helps build confidence.
There are occasional moments where communication between project and business as a whole could be better. But overall, the HR team are very helpful.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a good level of support from my employer. My line manager and wider team are approachable and always willing to help, whether it's explaining technical tasks or giving feedback on my progress. There’s also a strong culture of learning, where apprentices are encouraged to ask questions and take on new challenges.
Regular catch-ups, access to training resources, and support with university commitments all contribute to a positive environment. While there’s an expectation to be proactive and take responsibility, the support is there when needed, which makes a big difference.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive a fair level of support from my training provider. Most lecturers are helpful and willing to assist with questions or clarify topics, and there are resources available outside of class to support learning. Feedback on assignments is usually clear and helps me improve.
That said, there are times when lectures feel more focused on helping us pass assignments rather than properly developing our technical skills. A stronger emphasis on real world application and practical understanding would be beneficial. Overall though, the support is there if you seek it out, and the experience has helped me progress in both knowledge and confidence.

The qualification gives me a solid foundation in key concepts like measurement, procurement, and contract practice, which directly support my role. While some modules feel more academic, overall it helps me understand the bigger picture and apply theory to real project work.

Yes, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved beyond day-to-day work. I’ve taken part in volunteering days, which are a great way to give back to the community while building teamwork. There are also chances to support youth training and school outreach programmes, which I’ve found rewarding.
In addition, the company organises social events, apprentice networking sessions, and professional development talks, which help you connect with others across the business and build confidence outside of your immediate team.
