Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am an APEP apprentice, in my role I shadow and support engineers, allowing me to learn and take on my own projects in the future. In my role there are lots of opportunities for growth and working with new things.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I really enjoy working at JLR and I find it exciting to come into work everyday. The university side however could be improved.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Since my start in September, I have been involved in several projects and have got to try new things such as soldering. Everyone is very helpful and I have had advice and guidance along every step of the way.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
At JLR the structure is good, we plan what I am going to learn with my mentor and work on developing new skills. The planning from the university is quite last minute, we are often told things late and don't have much time to prepare for modules before they start.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
JLR is extremely supportive and offer a multitude of wellness and mental health help. They also offer lunchtime exercise lessons at some sites and there are people from different departments trained in mental health first aid if anyone ever needed someone to talk to.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
The support shown by the training provider is quite poor, support is available but this is limited and feels like it more applies to full time students. Not much support is shown with assessments and a high pressure environment is created surrounding exams, as there aren't really people to talk to about it. Module tutors do provide a feedback form but not all of them take the feedback on board.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
The qualification is in engineering, so the modules at university are needed to become a competent engineer. The course rarely uses real experiences and most situations are theoretical and taught from a classroom. Some of the modules include using paper work such as risk assessments from departments, but not much practical or real work is assessed. Some of the university work comes in helpful for my day to day role but it is mainly just for learning and not really applied to my role, although different roles will use different skills.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
JLR offers a platform that includes groups that everyone can join, this ranges from old car restorations to sports groups and general news. One of the networks has early career events that all apprentice streams and graduates can join, they hold events in person mostly outside of work to allow people to get to know each other better and learn new things. JLR also offer a lot of mock interviews and career development opportunities.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have had a really good start to JLR, everyone that I have met has been really friendly and happy to help. They offer lots of events to get involved with the company and have many great initiatives such as 'invest in you' where every employee is given £200 to learn something new (these are pre approved by JLR). JLR invests a lot into the welfare of their employees and remain to be the best company I have worked for.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
Just to be yourself, JLR want to know who you are, not a script that has been prepared. Going into a new or beginning a career is difficult so make sure that your not hard on yourself for not getting everything that you apply for and it is normal to get rejected a few times, you just have to keep trying.
