Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My job role includes refreshing data to report figures to higher management, collating data into powerpoint packs to be used in meetings and tracking progress against baselines. On a day to day basis this can include a lot of calls to get figures and confirm figures and the use of software such as excel and P6 to collate these figures.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Typically my uni days are the most enjoyable as I'm with people around my own age and people who have similar interests to myself so working along side them is fun. On placement, I get some enjoyment out of completing a task when I know I've done a good job.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt a lot of new IT skills, including computer shortcuts and how to use new software. My communication skills have been improved upon and how to speak with different stakeholders. My confidence has increased through communicating with higher management and talking during meetings.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
Some aspects are not very well organised. I was put into a placement initially with a manager who was on maternity leave and this issue had not been dealt with prior to me starting so I had to wait 2 weeks before a replacement manager was found for me.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I feel fully supported by my line manager. This is both including placement work, which I'm always fully taught before given the responsibility and Uni work as I'm able to take time towards my studies. Any further support can be easily found at BAE and it's regularly communicated to me what services are on offer.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I receive a reasonable amount of support. Some tasks given to me have a lack of information behind them, saying what to do. This can be difficult to work out. However, all the lecturers will help further explain anything when asked to do so.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I see strong links between topics covered at university and in placement. This helps in placement as I can understand the theory behind the practical application.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are a lot of stretch events available to get involved in. I have taken part in one event, where we lead a STEM event in a primary school. This opportunity helped to teach me a lot about communicating with new audiences and was enjoyable to be a part of.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a good place to work as there are so many opportunities within the business, including stretch events, moving abroad and furthering your education through qualifications funded by BAE.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
I'd advise people to get involved in as many opportunities as possible. This will keep your job more interesting and also helps to develop new skills.
