Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a Housing Officer at Cheshire West and Chester Council currently studying towards my Environmental Health Practitioners degree. Day to day I deal with complaints within the private rented sector and licencing of Houses of Multiple Occupation.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am thoroughly enjoying studying. The course content is interesting a relevant to my role and easy to follow with support from lecturers and apprenticeship supervisors easily available.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt and developed many skills while studying such as writing reports, collating data and presenting statistics.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The course structure is very well organised and easy to follow, the course is a 3 year degree carried out part time over 4 years with 3 modules per year, some are different levels within the same year. All lectures are over Microsoft teams and recorded, all course resources and lecture recordings are saved within a SharePoint site organised by module so are very easy to access and revisit if required.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Lots of support from my employer, I am given 1 day per week towards my studies, most of these are filled with lectures in term time. Out of term time, I can shadow other teams to gain experience in other areas or use that time towards my assignments. Other colleagues and teams within the department are very helpful and more than willing to support me with my studies for any assignments other areas.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive lots of support from my training provider, we can set up coaching sessions with the lecturers with upcoming assignments, they are always very quick to respond to emails if I have any questions, we can discuss assignment feedback with our lecturers and we also have regular progress meetings with the apprenticeship supervisor and my manager.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It has allowed me to gain essential knowledge and skills for my role and any other role within Environmental Health
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I meet up with lots of past and present colleagues throughout the year in a social settings

Why?
I have worked for Cheshire West and Chester Council for almost 10 years and I have completed 3 apprenticeships, other training courses and and now working towards my 4th apprenticeship. The Council is a good employer with great benefits for work-life balance and the training opportunities I have received have been essential for my career progression.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cheshire West and Chester Council?
Job adverts can be vague, always contact the hiring manager prior to application to discuss the role, this will show the manager you are interested and they may be looking to offer an interview so they can meet you in person
