Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Learning bench joinery doing different projects, learning new skills, practising techniques for how to continuously improve my work
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy my trade and what it entails, I do struggle a lot and take extra time to complete tasks. But we are only able to use a select amount of tools and equipment, and have no access to any machinery in the workshop which limits our learning.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
When I started back in September 2024, I had no skills for this job role. But now I have learnt the names and uses for tools and equipment, learnt joints and techniques.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
It's fairly structured, we have booklets to complete but do get interrupted every so often to complete other projects putting our required ones on hold.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Whenever I need help in the workshop it's available and the skills coach always checks on us all to make sure we are getting on alright. I have also received a lot of support for personal life from BAE.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
We work through a booklet and complete the projects in that, but can only go so far as we have no access to any machinery to train on.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I'm not to sure to be honest as after 9-12 months we will spend most of our time as tilers instead of joiners, but our epa is for joinery. So a good portion of our training isn't joinery.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
Not that i'm aware of and no one has ever mentioned anything like this in the business. I do think it would be beneficial to have things like this in the business across the different sites.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The money earned here can set you for life, you can learn many different trades and new skills. I am enjoying my trade but not getting the full experience as we can only use hand tools which limits our work progress.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Really look into what job role you are applying for.
