Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Complete analysis of the electrical grid distribution system and assess where new demand can connect.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
Mostly enjoyed the programme, got so see various parts of the business. However, I wish it was more structured to help learners with what is on the network and what it is made up of, earlier on in the apprenticeship.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Developed analytical and problem solving skills

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Programme quality seems dependant on where you end up in the business. Early on managers didn't understand what the programme was for and how to teach me. my first 18months was shadowing, which I welt went on too long and asked to move.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Support is given when asked for and most co-workers were happy to help me gain more knowledge. I think all learners however should be taught the basics together. Not knowing *what* questions to ask was a big blocker for me when out on site.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
No direct support, qualifications where mine to complete. Employer support comes from allowing time per week to complete qualification work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
The EPNE qualification from Loughborough College, offers very little transferable skills I found to help me in my role. The course was too general and many of the electrical engineering modules weren't relevant to a job withing energy distribution
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
No

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Whilst the training can be a bit of a miss, there are lots of interesting parts of the business to get involved with and multiple career paths to take whether it be operational and mostly outdoors, office based and indoors or a mixture of both.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
Research what SSE does before applying, can you see yourself doing the role.
