Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I spent the first year of the apprenticeship at the Aircraft Maintenance Academy at Humberside Airport. 5 days a week from 08:30 to 16:45. There we completed various engineering modules. On site at BAE we are placed into four month placements in different departments (Airworthiness, design etc). Work is a mix of hands on and computer based.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have mostly enjoyed the apprenticeship so far. The people you will work with are very knowledgeable and are keen to pass on what they know as long as you are willing to put the effort in. We completed out level 3 at HETA in Hull but since we have switched to remote learning which has been agreed by most to be a bad move.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Since joining the company I have developed new skills in communications, maths and science and many different engineering fields. I have also improved on my metal working skills and interpersonal skills.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Started off a bit unorganised due to the early careers team having staff shortages but since then it has come a long way and the programme is now very well structured.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

BAE has been very supportive during my time in the apprenticeship. They truly care about their employees and go the extra mile to help those who need it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Support has been good during my time, the first two years being on site at the different training colleges where support was available straight away, since going into remote learning this has taken a bit of a downfall but changes are being made and the future looks bright.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I have completed a Level 2 in Aeronautical engineering at the AMA and a level 3 in Mechanical engineering at HETA which has helped my in my roles within the country, I am currently on with my HNC which we were told was going to be in aeronautical engineering but is actually general engineering.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is always something going on at BAE, be it socials or get togethers. Too many to list really.

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall the company is a great one to work for. The work we do is years ahead of the civil sector and everyday is interesting and new. Just be sure to confirm that the qualifications are what you expect before applying.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Be confident in yourself. Having an interest in engineering is a must, even better if you have a passion for aeronautical engineering!
