Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Within BT apprenticeships, roles can vary due to the vast size of the company. My role resides in the Network Operation Centre (NOC) where we monitor the UK and Global Network to detect, diagnose and result faults and outages of customers. These come in the form of a ticketing system that drive our work load/demand.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
In the early years of the programme, we was given the opportunity to rotate on a 6month period to other areas of the business, enabling us opportunities to understand the business as a whole. In recent years this has stopped, however line managers to try to cater for case by case basis where you can visit for several days/weeks.
This resolution still needs work for it to be considered a fix.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Within the role you are quickly shadowing the team and shown the different dashboards and networks you will be working with, you have easy access to experienced professionals within the their respective field as well as access to Vendor Accredited Certifications. In doing your role within the NOC, you will be exposed and develop skills in Internet Protocol Networking and problem solving.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The organisation and structure of the programme has become better over recent years, with the loss of rotations you now know what your doing start to finish rather than having options. Further more with the introduction of the Early Careers team, more events are being organised for apprentices to listen to guest speakers and hear from professionals for our development.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
BT provide a lot of support, whether this be on a personal level by having a vast amount of communities across the organisation so that you feel a sense of belonging. To career support in assigning capable mentors and setting up board groups where you have a safe space to develop skills with directors and senior managers.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
Support from the training provider is certainly the weakest side of the apprenticeship, with getting answers out of the university being comparable to blood from a stone. Actions from the university are always later and communication lacks which leads to a lot of confusion surrounding deadlines, start times and even struggles to ascertain access to mandatory equipment.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
Simply put, not well at all. The university recycle a lot of their content from previous years meaning that you aren't learning the latest technology. Comparing slides and Assignment briefs to previous year apprentices deems the EXACT same content, and a lot of the content doesn't related to the job.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
YES! Here at Ipswich BT there is a large campus feel, with an onsite sports leisure and sport programme (ATLAS). The team behind this organise social events such as park runs, sports days and even sport dedicated societies to enable you to network.
Furthermore on the professional events, there is a plethora of tech conferences held across the business and online TED talks to interact with others in Areas of interest.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend BT Group because it offers strong support, hands-on experience, and great opportunities to develop both personally and professionally. The work environment is inclusive, with access to experienced mentors, certifications, and networking events. It’s a great place to grow your skills and build a solid career foundation.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
BT is a large and well known group, however don't let this discourage you from applying to the business. We are the largest employer of apprentices within the private sector and we have to fill them numbers so this could be you!
Even if the role you're applying for isn't exactly what you want, BT is a large company with a lot of opportunity to move internally once you've got your foot in the door.
