Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My role involves a daily stand up meeting and working on tasks I have been assigned and sharing my progress on the tasks. This can be anything from bug fixes to testing software or updating documentation about the software. My responsibilities outside of the office role include my degree and portfolio of evidence.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I very much enjoy my programme and the balance between project work and university work. I find this is the best bit and enjoy the variety of stuff I get to do each week and also the different university modules make each term interesting and exciting. Especially the on site university work which is definitely my favourite part of the programme.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I've learnt about how software is delivered and how to code (although I'm still not great at it) on a big project and how the interaction of different parts of the software interact with each other. Additionally I have found my university experience rewarding and fun and this teaches me software skills which I enjoy learning about.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I think it is very well organised on the whole. It can get a little confusing around term times when university is not on what the expectation is, whether that is to be on the project work or do reading for the next term if it is end of term or do assignments if it is half term and that clarification and apprentice wide structure would be appreciated.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer and especially my skills coach. They are always there to support me and ensure I'm making progress on my portfolio of evidence. I feel comfortable reaching out for help and also feel supported by my university professors.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
A lot of support but doing the lectures online compared to the people in the class does have its difficulties and sometimes extra support is needed for the online people. However they have been very good at recognising this and the support has gotten better the longer uni has gone on for so I am happy with the support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I think it does help, however learning to code and then applying that on a massive project is difficult as there is more to understand than just the principles of coding and understand the project structure is vital but that cannot be taught at uni so whilst it does help, I think more focus on understanding big projects would be beneficial
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
Honestly in the Yeovil office there aren't too many so I fill my free time with my friends outside of work. I would say this is the biggest downside of the Yeovil office.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Lots of work to do and helpful people who want you to succeed and this makes it a good place to work. The best part is the understanding of work life balance.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
In the application process I would state why you love software and your willingness to learn, that would be my best advice.
