Intern Review

The first week was labelled the 'Business of Law'. During this, I attended sessions on a range of topics led by people internal and external to CMS. For example, I met with plenty of senior figures at CMS, who were lawyers and business administrative support staff. In addition, I attended sessions on responsible business, client dialogues, and executive coaching.
Furthermore, I was involved in a simulation exercise and delivered a presentation on how CMS can become the most sustainable law firm in the world.

There was a lot of information to take in, no doubt about that. At times it was almost overwhelming, but I believe this is a natural consequence of learning about legal sector from the people who experience it everyday. It was incredibly insightful and I think I am incredibly lucky to have been so well informed about the demands that a career in law places onto you.

Yes, I have learnt many new skills and developed some existing ones.
For my existing skills, I developed my ability to work effectively in teams under pressure, strengthening communication skills to work effectively with my colleagues. Additionally, I improved my ability to put myself in other people's shoes and empathise with their situation, whether that be clients or colleagues.
For new skills, I learnt how to manage and engage with stakeholders. This is a key skill I hope to take forward with me into the in-person element of the internship.

The company culture was built on respect and trust. This was demonstrated by people at all levels of the organisation.

I enjoyed it so much. I feel fully informed about the organisation and the industry more generally.
