My role once I qualify will be to maintain and test the plant equipment on the electricity network. This includes circuit breakers, transformers, isolators and other switchgear on the network.
This requires a lot of planning and approval as to work on the plant we need to re configure the network to make the equipment safe to work on.

I enjoy it a lot since i’m never in the same place and everyday is different.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Before I started I was very shy and didn’t have a lot of confidence. Since joining however I have learnt over time how to adapt to my environment and overcome challenges. I gained both personal development and a lot of electrical and mechanical knowledge.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

So the program itself is very good. I have different managers I can talk to and assessors who are always happy to help when I have technical questions.
I do feel there is a slight gap between the training side and actual business side. However this is being looked at and the gap is getting smaller as there is better understanding between both sectors.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

A healthy amount. They help me get on the right path to stay productive and give me loads of information to access to build my knowledge on engineering.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
It depends who you are as a person but don’t be afraid about not knowing certain things and or making mistakes. You’re there to learn and nearly everyone here has gone through this same apprenticeship scheme so they understand what it’s like. When you have your introduction to your depot it’s important to get to know everyone and get numbers so you can talk to them when need help. And more importantly make yourself available and be involved. You will gain a little respect that way
