Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Civil Engineering. Design. Structural Analysis. Management. Building Information Modelling.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
Required lots of time management skills to juggle work with university requirements. UWE functioned well as a training provider. Day release worked well and did not interfere much with work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes. Developed into a working engineer with lots of experience with software and systems used in the industry.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Was initially not very organised, however has developed over time into a more clearly defined structure.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
The team has been very supportive and always willing to help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
UWE were supportive as a training provider. Some of the staff were not as aware of the needs of apprentices but this improved over time. Time tabling exam dates was sometimes difficult with work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Gave a good baseline for the maths and knowledge required within the industry. Built skills in report writing and giving presentations as well.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes the team often go out for drinks and there are a number of social groups to join at work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Jacobs to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend the team I work with. I am less sure about other teams that I know were less supportive of their apprentices and graduates. I have however had a very positive experience.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Jacobs?
Talk with other apprentices and graduates when starting. They can support you and make sure the team you are in are supporting you properly. Make contacts on your course and see what their companies are like.
