3/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I am an apprentice jointer working on the underground cable network on what is meant to be a day to day basis, at the moment I divide my time between that as well as time spent in the office doing writeups that I need to pass to fully pass out as a fully qualified jointer
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy what should be the day to day, getting out and getting into a hole to do some jointing, unfortunately I do find myself frustrated at times with how difficult getting out can be to achieve.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, particularly in my hand skills as well as my technical knowledge, the training has been good to that end

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
I have found the organisation to be lacking for much of my time at SSE, whilst I do largely enjoy my time in the company, the sheer amount of effort and stress it takes to get to the actual work largely detracts from my enjoyment.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I am often reminded of and feel secure in the knowledge that there are many good support networks for varying issues that may arise within and outwith the company
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
With regards to evidence, which makes up the body of work needed to achieve my qualification, I feel as though these evidence pieces can be difficult to attain a lack of day to day work
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The process of attaining my qualification has definitely helped me progress as a jointer
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
Not to my knowledge

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I believe that if and when you can rise above the issues stated above that this apprenticeship is one worth doing, the qualification on offer has the potential to take you far within SSE or elsewhere.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
SSE is a very safety focused company, maybe above all else, and anyone applying to SSE should have a clear sense of safety and accompanying behaviours/practices
