Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

A varied role, with lots of interesting opportunities to get involved in. Work on environmental assessments from local river restoration schemes to nationally significant energy infrastructure projects. Using professional judgement and tools to assess the impacts of projects on the environment and opportunities for environmental improvement.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy the programme. Having the opportunity to do work that has a positive impact on the real world feels very rewarding.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I have developed existing skills using ArcGIS Pro. I have developed an understanding of environmental constraints and opportunities that may present themselves in projects. I have learned a whole range of overall professional 'soft skills'. I have started to learn about coordination for Environmental Impact Assessment on projects.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is structured well. Depending on office location, learning at university will take place as either day or block release. For me, I spend one day a week at university during term time, and will do over the next 5 years.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of helpful support from my employer. I check in with my line manager who also has a mentoring role at the start and end of each week too check I have the right workload for the week. Everyone in my team is always happy to give support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

If I need support, it is offered by University. The lecturers are happy to be contacted by email with any questions about the course and assessments. There are also people dedicated to supporting with University workload in terms of assignments and mental health support.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification has been very helpful so far in helping me in my role at work. In particular, a module on ArcGIS Pro has been very helpful in creating environmental constraints maps at work. In third year, there is a module on Environmental Assessment, which will be very useful for my role at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes! There are so many options for extra-curricular activities at work. Social activities in teams normally happen once a week. There are numerous after work sports activities from football, padel, and tag rugby to climbing and surfing. There are trips that are offered too, such as the climbing and surf trips, which sometimes go abroad.

Yes
Why?
Because of the great opportunities for career progression, and the chances to develop your interests in work and create your own 'niche'. The social aspect is amazing and gives so many chances to make friends as long as you get stuck in!
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
Have a look on Arup's website for a project[s] that you find interesting. Also, read the key speech by Ove Arup, and look at Arup's core values, which are a big part of the ethos and give a positive and friendly feel to working here.
