Mechanical Engineering Intern Review

My job role consists of supporting the Engineering team with their project work by using solidworks to assist with designing, modelling solutions to problems or ways to improve the sites processes or products. These ideas will then need support after such as creating drawing on how the solution will be made. The job also consists of creating/amending production drawings so the factory can make the products. The job also gives you a real insight into different parts of the business as you have time to work in different parts of the business and with different teams.

During my placement I was given a perfect amount of responsibility, this was done by slowly being given responsibility as the placement progressed so they knew I was at the right level of knowledge or skill set to deal with the task. However if there was a task or project which I wanted to learn more about I could ask to be apart of it and they will fit it into my daily tasks. The team and other employees in the office are always there for if I had any questions or was unsure on something and would guide myself through the next steps.

The placement with EATON has helped me develop so many of my skills such as:
My communication skills both professionally (Meetings and emails) and more casual skills (Networking with people on different sites and different departments). I have also improved my SOLIDWORKS skills which is something I've really enjoyed seeing my quality of work improve. My placement has also helped me learn new skills such as using systems most big businesses use such as SAP and learning how to use different machinery used in production.

During my placement I was given so much support with any of the tasks I was doing. In the office I am sat next to the whole Engineering department and if I had any questions all I had to do was ask and they would make sure I understood how to complete the task in the future if it arose again. The engineering team taught me how to use so many different software's, helped improve my solidworks skills as well as teaching different business procedures which are used in most businesses.

The company culture at EATON is very good at making sure everyone feels welcome and apart of the team. The office also has a charity and wellness committee which looks at raising awareness for different events such as pride month and running charity events for different charities both locally and internationally. The general atmosphere in the office is very accepting and so easy to talk to everyone, if I or anyone else needed any help with any work I could approach anyone even if they weren't in my department. Lastly if there was something more personal anyone wanted to talk about there are mental first aiders onsite which are there to help with any problems.

I have really enjoyed my placement for so many different reasons. Firstly I have really enjoyed meeting new people in the office and starting to create my professional network. Secondly I have enjoyed improving my overall engineering and business knowledge which would will be very useful in my future career. I also enjoyed seeing that the work I was doing was making a real impact for the business and seeing this work be put into action and seeing the results.
