As a higher science apprentice, my time is split between two laboratories.
My role entails: laboratory work & analysis, data interpretation & reporting, learning & development, compliance safety, collaboration & communication and problem solving.
Typical day to day tasks:
Prepare samples for analysis
Calibrate & run instruments for analysis
Record and analyse data
discussions with team and supervisors
Report writing
Training sessions/workshops
Compliance with safety protocols.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The hands on experience has been incredibly valuable and I enjoy applying concepts and techniques in a practical setting. However, I feel that other aspects of the apprenticeship are lacking. For example, I could benefit from more structured learning and guidance outside of lab work and college, as well as clearer communication and support. While the practical work is fulfilling, the overall experience would be much more rewarding with better balance and support in other areas of the program

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The quality of theoretical learning, lack of mentorship and no clear structure or progression routes are a cause of concern. Guidance and consistency would go a long way within this program.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

The support I receive from my employer is limited. While there is some guidance during hands on tasks from analysts , there isn't much ongoing mentorship or support for my development beyond practical work. I feel that more proactive engagement, especially in terms of feedback and career development, would be beneficial to help development and getting the most out of the apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Other than quarterly reviews with my line manager and training provider, there isn't much support. The reviews are sometimes helpful but infrequent, and there is limited ongoing guidance or interaction outside of those check ins.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The development in theoretical knowledge is always useful however there is a disconnect when coming to applying it due to the lack of framework and progression.
